The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the seaport's cargo activity continued at record high levels compared to the month prior as well as pre-pandemic performance seen in May 2019.
The busiest container port on the East Coast of the United States moved 845,305 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in May 2022, the second-busiest month of cargo activity in the port's history.
It added that the seaport moved nearly one-third more cargo in May 2022 compared to the monthly volume handled during pre-pandemic May 2019.
Compared to the month prior, in May 2022 cargo movement at the seaport was up 5.3%.
"May 2022 cargo volume was up 31.3% compared to May 2019 and up 5.3% compared to April 2022, when the seaport handled 802,963 TEUs," the Port of New York and New Jersey said in a statement.
Port of New York and New Jersey's terminals are located throughout the New York metropolitan area including Newark, New Jersey. The largest terminal in the port is operated by Maher Terminals.
