Shanghai Port remained the world's busiest container port in 2022, although noting only marginal growth year-on-year due to Covid-19-related disruptions at the major Chinese port.
State media reported that the port's container throughput exceeded 47.3 million Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) last year, citing data from port operator Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd.
"Shanghai Port remained the world's busiest container port for the 13th straight year in 2022, despite the COVID-19 epidemic," Xinhua reported.
It added that following the epidemic in the second quarter, the port managed to "quickly make a V-shaped recovery" in container throughput in July when it handled a monthly record high of 4.3 million TEUs.
Nonetheless, the 2022 performance of the port was only slightly higher than the 47 million TEUs recorded at Shanghai Port in 2021.
As of November, the port's closest rival is the Port of Singapore which recorded a throughput of 34 million TEUs between January-November 2022.
