Hongkong Post announced that all airmail services from the financial hub to France, Monaco and Reunion have been suspended.

"Owing to the substantial reduction in flight frequencies or even cancellation of flights by airlines for certain destinations, all airmail services (including Speedpost) to France, Monaco and Reunion will be suspended from tomorrow (January 11) until further notice," Hong Kong's postal service provider said.

"Hongkong Post will continue working with air freight contractors closely for resumption of the impacted services as soon as possible," it added.

Capacity remains tight in Hong Kong after Cathay Pacific earlier announced "very substantial reductions" to long-haul cargo capacity in the first quarter amid tighter crew quarantine rules impacting its operations.

Hong Kong also announced a halt in passenger flights from eight countries — the UK, Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the United States — amid the recent surge in the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The ban came into effect from January 8  and will last for 14 days, further squeezing the already tight air cargo capacity from one of the world's busiest cargo hubs.
