Maersk has announced it is building its first green and smart flagship logistics centre in Lin-gang, Shanghai, expected to commence operation in 2024.

The Danish shipping company said it signed the Land Grant Contract with the administrative committee of Lin-gang's new area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone in late December 2022.

"This marks the official landing of Maersk's first green and smart flagship logistics centre in China with low or very low greenhouse gas emissions," Maersk said.

"With a total investment of US$174 million, the project is expected to start operation in Q3 2024," it added.

Maersk said the centre would cover an area of approximately 113,000 sqm; the Lin-gang flagship logistics centre is designed to have warehousing storage of 150,000 sqm, comprising four ramped 3-storey high standard warehouses and one 24-metre-high warehouse with automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS).

End-to-end logistics solution

It will also provide customers with a wide range of integrated logistics services, including international export consolidation, regional and global order fulfilment and distribution, cross-border e-commerce and other value-added logistics services.

"Maersk is continuously enhancing its logistics capabilities to offer integrated end-to-end solutions to customers worldwide," the shipping company said.

Caroline Wu, managing director of Maersk Greater China, noted that Shanghai plays a "critical role" in Maersk's global network.

"With Lin-gang's proximity to Yangshan port and its favourable free trade policies, our flagship logistics centre will provide agile and sustainable solutions, connecting and simplifying our customers' supply chains," Wu said.

"We will continue to invest in China, contributing to Shanghai's position as a leading global shipping and logistics centre, and the resilience of global supply chains."

Maersk noted that the facility would apply for the highest platinum-level certification of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

It will use environmental-friendly materials in construction and be equipped with a rainwater management system and solar panels to optimize efficiency on water and energy consumption.

Upon completion, to further improve the environmental footprint, the new facility will be equipped with LED lighting, natural ventilation, non-fossil energy heating systems and electric vehicle and equipment charging piles.
