The MSC Group is partnering with Lufthansa in a bid to acquire a majority stake in Italy's ITA Airways.
MSC Group, which has main interests in container shipping and logistics businesses, said in a statement that the deal would leverage synergies in both passenger and cargo.
It added that Lufthansa, Germany's flag carrier and largest airline, has already expressed its interest in taking part in the initiative.
"MSC Group has expressed to the Italian Government its interest in acquiring a majority stake in ITA Airways," MSC said.
"MSC Group's interest derives from the possibility of activating positive synergies for both companies in the cargo and passenger sectors where the MSC Group is a global leader."
It said the MSC Group aims to create a partnership with the Italian Government and Lufthansa as the project's industrial partner.
Following the announcement of its intent for the purchase, it said MSC and Lufthansa, require an exclusivity period of 90 business days and are subject to regulatory approvals and due diligence.
